Daily Titan Silent Auction

By Samuel Chi

On Saturday, the Daily Titan, Cal State Fullerton's student newspaper, held its 50th anniversary reunion. The event, aside from commemorating five decades of excellence, also served as the retirement party for Dean Rick Pullen, who decided to hang it up after 37 years at the school.

A number of items were donated for a silent auction to benefit scholarship funds in the names of Pullen and Jay Berman, a long-time Daily Titan adviser who shaped the careers of a number of excellent journalists. They ranged from autographed shoes of Bruce Bowen (procured by Marc Stein of ESPN.com), old newspaper collections and other memorabilia.

The Titan baseball team donated a number of items as well, including a jersey autographed by both coach Dave Serrano and former coach George Horton and a batting helmet autographed by Serrano and the entire 2010 team. Pullen, a long-time Titan baseball fan and season ticket holder, was given a white Titans jersey with his name on the back and the number of - 30 - (old journalism term for "The End").

A bidding war broke out for the autographed batting helmet, which was won by yours truly. I'm betting that this will be the works of the 2010 national champs.
